What Is Composite Bonding in Cosmetic Dentistry?

Composite bonding is a non-invasive cosmetic dentistry procedure used to repair, rebuild, and restore teeth. It is one of the most affordable treatments offered by dentists, but it is also a versatile dental procedure.

Getting teeth treated with a composite resin does not require any permanent changes to the tooth being restored, so those who have their teeth fixed with composite bonding are free to explore other options in the future. Composite bonding is typically used in cosmetic dentistry to address issues like:

  • Chipped, cracked or broken teeth
  • Deformed teeth
  • Discolored teeth
  • Teeth that have been damaged by tooth decay
  • Spaces between teeth
  • Worn-down teeth

How composite bonding is used in cosmetic dentistry

Getting cosmetic dentistry treatments with composite bonding starts with a dentist. Repairs made with composite resin tend to be less durable than fixing a damaged tooth with a restoration like a crown. On average, repairs made with composite resin only last a few years, while using restorations like a crown can provide a fix that can last over 25 years.

The composites used for cosmetic treatments can be color-matched with the rest of the patient's teeth, so any restorations look natural. The process of repairing a tooth with a composite resin starts with the dentist preparing the tooth for the composite. An etching solution is applied to the tooth being treated, and this roughens its surfaces, making it easier for the composite resin to bond to it.

The dentist then applies the composite to the patient's teeth in layers, hardening each layer with a curing light. The composite is shaped as desired and polished so it shines like a real tooth. There is no recovery period after having teeth repaired with dental bonding. Patients can return to their regular activities as soon as their treatment is complete. But they should avoid eating and drinking things that can discolor the composite for the first 48 hours while it sets.

Taking care of repairs made with composite resin

The composite resin used in dentistry is a combination of plastics and glass. The material does not require specialized care; good oral hygiene is all it takes to ensure that any repairs made last at least a few years. Good oral hygiene includes brushing twice daily, flossing once daily and using an antibacterial mouthwash to kill bacteria in the mouth.

Biannual trips to a dentist are important when a person has teeth that have been restored with composite resin. The dentist can perform touch-up treatments as needed to get rid of any stains that form on the composite and to restore the repairs made. Patients should avoid habits like chewing on ice that can end up breaking down the composite.
