Tooth Removal and Dentures FAQs

Tooth Removal And Dentures Bakersfield, CA

Patients ask some common questions when they need tooth removal and dentures. If you suffer from missing multiple teeth and your dentist has suggested you need to get dentures, you will have many questions that need answering.

We all want to keep our natural teeth for as long as possible but sometimes, needing dentures is unavoidable through no fault of your own. You can take the best care of your teeth, always have the most successful dental check-ups, and make sure to brush your teeth and floss twice a day.

Even though you did everything right, you still may end up needing dentures. Things happen. It is a good idea to do your research, ask questions, and be prepared for the entire process.

What are dentures?

Dentures are a type of tooth replacement. They are made to be put in and taken out of your mouth. Your dentist will take a molded impression of your mouth after any remaining teeth are taken out, and then your dentures will be created in a lab.

Dentures can last anywhere from 7 to 10 years if taken care of properly and may sometimes need to be rebased or relined within that time frame. This could happen because of normal wear and tear of the dentures, or they may have been broken or damaged.

Is tooth removal necessary?

If your dentist recommends that you are missing more than half of your upper or lower teeth, they will recommend tooth removal and dentures. Tooth removal becomes necessary because, to take a complete mold for your dentures, all the teeth need to be removed.

Your dentures become the replacement for all your teeth in either your upper, lower jaw or both. The final decision on what type of dentures you need is up to your dentist and, in the end, you.

Can I eat anything with dentures?

After receiving your dentures, your dentist will go over how to care for, clean, and handle your dentures. They will also talk with you about what type of foods are okay to eat and which ones you should stay away from.Typically, you should avoid sticky foods such as candy and other sugary foods. Anything hard, tough or chewy is not a good idea either.

You should eat soft food like pudding, berries, seedless grapes, and most other healthy items. You can always double-check with your dentist if you are unsure of a certain food.

Will my insurance cover dentures?

You should always call your dental coverage provider and ask if any or all tooth removal costs and dentures are covered. They should be able to tell you the amount of out-of-pocket expenses you should expect.

Ask your dental office if they offer any payment plan or special financing if you feel you won’t be able to afford to pay your balance all at the time of service.
