Healthy Dental Care Tips for Seniors

Wanting a few dental care tips for seniors? Good for you! As you age, you may begin to notice a few differences in the overall health of your mouth. Understand that these differences may not be directly related to your oral health and instead may be related to any medical conditions you are currently living with. For example, if you have arthritis, it may be difficult for you to properly brush and floss your teeth on a daily basis. Since there are a few dental issues that tend to come with age, it is necessary for you to be aware of these issues in case you happen to experience one or more of them.

Healthy dental care tips for seniors

The following is a list of really great dental care tips for seniors that will help to ensure the overall health of their mouth is always in good shape.

#1 – Brushing and flossing

Gently brushing at least twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush using a fluoridated toothpaste is recommended. Flossing at least once a day in order to remove anything that brushing missed is also necessary for good oral health.

#2 – Hydration

Staying hydrated is especially important when seniors are taking certain medications. This is not only important to one’s overall good dental health, but it is also important to their overall good general health.

#3 – Mouthwash

According to the American Dental Association, anti-bacterial mouthwash can reduce bacteria that cause plaque and gum disease.

#4 – Dry mouth

Dry mouth increases one’s chance of being diagnosed with gum disease and can occur for many reasons, like taking certain medications or not drinking enough water. Chewing sugarless gum is one easy solution to a dry mouth problem.

#5 – Fluoride

Adding more fluoride to one’s dental care routine will improve their chances of having a healthy mouth. In order to understand exactly how much fluoride should be taken, asking a dental professional is highly recommended.

#6 – Regular dental appointments

Getting regular dental check-ups is even more important as we age. Everyone is different, making it necessary for seniors to check with a dentist on how often they should come in for a dental check-up, e.g., every three months, every six months, every 12 months.
