Dental Restoration: Implant Versus Bridge for Single Tooth Replacement

Dental Restorations Bakersfield, CA

If you have a missing tooth, you may want to know about your dental restoration options. Two of those include bridges and implants. However, you might be wondering which one you should choose. Each one has its own benefits. Continue reading to learn more about each of these options for you.

What are dental implants?

If the patient has lost a tooth because of periodontal disease or an injury, the dentist may suggest a dental implant to restore the tooth. This is a post made out of titanium, which acts as the root of the tooth. It supports a crown, which is the visible portion of the dental restoration. The dentist will surgically place the implant in the patient’s jawbone. Over the next several months, it will integrate with the jawbone.

After this process has finished about three to six months later, the dentist will attach an abutment. This sticks out above the gumline and allows the crown to be cemented in place. With an endosteal implant, it is inserted into the jawbone during the surgery. The patient will need to have a second surgery in order to connect the implant to the post. Finally, the patient will have an artificial tooth attached to the post.

On the other hand, a subperiosteal implant consists of a metal frame placed on the jawbone. This is just below the gum tissue. As the gums heal, the frame will attach itself to the jawbone. When it is ready, the dentist will stitch the false tooth to the post. This type is not quite as common. One of the benefits of an implant is that it can prevent bone loss and function like a natural tooth.

What are dental bridges?

A dental bridge can connect the gap that is left by a missing tooth. The dental bridge can be supported by the remaining natural teeth on either side. Each tooth will receive a crown. That way, the bridge can be anchored in place. The most common type of bridge is made out of porcelain fused to metal or ceramics.

One of the benefits of dental bridges is that there is no surgery required. This makes the process faster overall. There is not going to be weeks of waiting for the bone to fuse to the implant. The procedure is also simpler, so the patient is less likely to experience pain.

Many patients find that bridges are not as expensive as dental implants. This makes the bridges a more budget-friendly investment. However, patients will need to have the bridges replaced more often. There is also the risk of added wear on the nearby teeth.

Visit a dentist for a dental restoration

No matter which type of dental restoration you are considering, it is a good idea to visit your dentist. Your dentist can help decide which option will work better for you. This will depend on the location of the missing tooth as well as your oral health. Your budget may also play a role in this.
