Keep reading to find out more about broken dentures.

Broken dentures

First and foremost, it is important to understand what dentures are made of so that you can better understand how and why they break so easily.

Denture materials

Dentures are made of a lot of different materials but the most common include, plastic, porcelain, acrylic resin, metal or nylon. The metal portion of dentures (if needed) tends to be pretty strong, but every other area of dentures can be extremely susceptible to damage.

Acrylic resin, nylon, porcelain and even plastic are all said to be durable materials that can withstand years of wear and tear, but if they incur damages such as being dropped, then they are likely going to break.

Can broken dentures be fixed?

Absolutely. However, it depends on the circumstance. Not all dentures can be repaired, and not all dentures are irreparable. It really depends on the type of damage that has incurred.

Dentures that have become worn down can be relined or rebased so that the fit is natural again. Typically, relining can be done right in the office. However, if the break is severe enough, such as an extreme crack or shatter, then the dentures may have to be sent off to a dental laboratory to be completely repaired. Even then, the lab technicians may have to start a replacement instead of a repair. Again, this depends on how bad the damage is.

What causes dentures to break?

Dentures break for many reasons but the most common occur due to dropping the dentures so hard that they crack, wear and tear over time that may naturally occur and biting down on something too hard that may cause a crack or fracture.

It is best to regularly see a dental professional so that they can ensure that your dentures are in the best shape possible. Thus, allowing for preventative measures to be taken so that the dentures are less likely to break.
