Am I at Risk for Tooth Decay?

Want to know whether you are at risk for tooth decay? Read on to learn more about the risk factors of this condition. Tooth decay is not something that anyone wants to experience; however, it does happen, and quite frequently. While some cases of tooth decay are hard to control, there are a few things that make someone more at risk than others.

What makes someone at risk of developing tooth decay?

Outlined below are a few ways to tell if you are at risk of experiencing tooth decay. Reviewing this information can be helpful for individuals who feel they might be at risk.

A lack of oral hygiene

Individuals that struggle with oral hygiene are definitely at risk of developing tooth decay. Oral hygiene is a crucial component of maintaining good health. Without it, the teeth can become severely built up with plaque and tartar, both of which can result in tooth decay.

A strict oral hygiene regimen should include the following:

  • Brushing the teeth twice a day or after every meal
  • Using a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Utilizing a fluoride-based toothpaste a few times a week
  • Rinsing with a gentle mouthwash or saltwater at least once a day

Of course, each individual may have specific oral hygiene needs, which can be determined by a dentist. Those who struggle with tooth decay more than others may be provided with a special toothpaste or mouthwash to help reduce the risk of developing cavities. These special products usually contain high amounts of fluoride, which is an agent used to mineralize the teeth, making them stronger and less susceptible to decay.

Sugary and acidic items

Another thing that makes someone at risk of developing tooth decay is the type of foods and beverages that they consume. A lot of everyday beverages include high amounts of sugar, which can be extremely dangerous to the teeth. Beverages such as soda, juices, and alcohol can all do irreparable damage to the teeth, often resulting in tooth decay. As far as foods go, highly acidic fruits and sugary desserts can both lead to tooth decay, especially if oral hygiene is slacking too.

While it may not be possible to completely avoid these certain foods and beverages, it is highly recommended to consume them in moderation. Additionally, if sugary and acidic things cannot be eliminated from one's diet, it is best to brush or rinse immediately after consumption. This will help to rid the teeth of any food remnants that could lead to tooth decay.

Other things to know about tooth decay

When it comes to tooth decay, most people think that it happens overnight, but that is actually not the case. Tooth decay starts out as bacteria that did not get cleaned off of the teeth. Over time, bacteria turn into plaque and tartar, which eat away at the enamel. Long-term, the teeth will begin to decay as a result.
