The following is a list of five common dental emergencies that can happen anytime and anywhere. Along with each dental emergency is information on how to deal with that particular type of emergency.

Dental emergency #1 — a painful toothache

How to deal with it — Rinse the mouth with warm salt water, and make sure there are no hidden food particles.

Dental emergency #2 — a broken tooth

How to deal with it — Rinse the mouth with warm salt water, apply a cold compress and call a dentist.

Dental emergency #3 — a bit lip or tongue

How to deal with it — Clean the area and apply a cold compress. If bleeding continues after 15 minutes, emergency treatment is needed.

Dental emergency #4 — a fractured tooth

How to deal with it — Rinse the mouth with warm salt water, and apply a cold compress. If the fracture is minor, it may not need any dental treatment, but if the fracture is major, then a dental appointment will need to be made as soon as possible.

Dental emergency #5 — a completely knocked-out tooth

How to deal with it — Put the tooth in milk or water, apply gentle pressure to the area and call a dentist for an emergency dental appointment.
